Giving the invisible hand a helping hand: How ‘Grants Offices’ work to nourish neoliberal researchers

Neoliberalism has become a highly dominating and taken-for-granted way of organising the university sector around world. In critical educational literature, this market-based rationality been scrutinised in detail over past decades. However, rather scant attention directed to how managers administrators, apart from setting up quasi-markets, may intervene more directly give invisible hand market helping hand. Aiming address lacuna, purpose current article is develop an empirically grounded taxonomy different types such interventions, theorise them terms facets neoliberal milieu that they reproduce various forms subjectivising work among academics seek engender. We do so by means qualitative study so-called ‘Grants Offices’ at three Swedish universities. The findings arguably add problematise our understanding markets academia ways.
